'A Skin Less Ordinary' Spring / Summer 2009
A handcrafted collection by Maria Lau

A playful and diverse collection inspired by tribal and African Masai jewellery where pieces are worn layered to create personable combinations, juxtaposing low-fi matte nude tights with semi-precious stones and high-octane surfaces. This handcrafted fashion jewellery collection celebrates the banal whilst disguising its identity through the hand at work. Pieces are casual, avant-garde and opulent.

The ironic use of tights becomes new expressions on the body, almost unrecognisable in their altered form, with lengths of braid, sculptural twists and toes turning into petals. An exploration of scale leads to pieces that have a naive simplicity and bold feel reaching into an 'organic futuristic' style.

Simple hand techniques develop into experimental and intricate processes, and by handcrafting many of the designs directly on the dummy, the materials and making process are allowed to inform shape and spontaneous forms.

In addition, simpler pieces in hematine minerals with metallic finishes carry through the playfulness of the collection with its magnetic qualities.
